Liquid Television 3-Disc Box Set DVD
Liquid Television is the early-1990s MTV experimental short-form animation block, anthologizing a rotating set of independent animator shorts, music-video-derived segments, and serialized pieces that introduced a generation of viewers to underground and avant-garde animation. The show ran on MTV across 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1995, with 23 episodes spread across multiple seasons that bundled together work from a wide range of independent animators, including the early adventures of Aeon Flux, Beavis and Butt-Head, and Stick Figure Theatre.
What stands out is the show's commitment to format pluralism. Each episode runs a rotating set of independent shorts and serials, the writing leans hard into adult-leaning experimental tones that almost no other broadcast outlet was willing to fund at the time, and the rotating roster of contributors gives each entry its own visual fingerprint. The animation styles cover everything from rotoscoped figure animation to mixed-media collage to early-CG experimentation.
It belongs to a specific early-1990s MTV experimental-animation moment, the same network that pioneered the format for a generation of viewers and that gave eventual major-property animations like Beavis and Butt-Head and Aeon Flux their initial homes. For viewers who tracked MTV animation across that era, Liquid Television is the foundational title from which much of the era's broader animated comedy emerged.
Highlights in the set include "Invisible Hands," "Aeon Flux," "Stick Figure Theater," "The Art School Girls of Doom," "Winter Steele," "Beavis and Butt-head: Frog Baseball," "The Specialists," "Dog Boy," "The Listener," "Elvis Meets the Spider People from Hell," "Doctor Zum: Typical Records," "The Honky Problem," and "Joe Normal," episodes that capture both the show's quietest experimental shorts and its most-cited serialized segments. This 3-DVD collection gathers 23 episodes from across the run, a deep archival home for Liquid Television.
