Moana follows young Moana, the daughter of the chief of the Polynesian island of Motunui, as she sets out across the open ocean to find the demigod Maui and convince him to help restore the heart of the goddess Te Fiti, after Maui's earlier theft of the heart unleashed a creeping darkness that now threatens her entire island home. With her loyal pet rooster Heihei stowing away aboard her boat, Moana must overcome her fear of the open sea and discover her own connection to her people's seafaring traditions. The film plays as a feature-length Disney CGI animated adventure-musical entry.
