Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! (1969) 5-Disc Box Set DVD
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! is the original Hanna-Barbera animated series that launched the entire Scooby-Doo franchise on CBS in 1969. The show ran across three seasons of original episodes through 1970, with later runs on ABC, The WB, Cartoon Network, and Boomerang keeping the series in continuous broadcast for decades. The format established the formula every subsequent Scooby-Doo property has built on: Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby travel in the Mystery Machine to a haunted location, investigate apparent supernatural phenomena, and reveal the ghost or monster as a costumed criminal in the unmasking finale.
What makes the original distinct is its formative status. Where every later Scooby-Doo property has been working in the shadow of this run, this show invented every signature element the franchise built into its identity. The format ran rigorously to its mystery-of-the-week structure, with each episode setting up a new haunted location, a new costumed antagonist, and the same five-character ensemble working through the case toward the unmasking. The voice cast and the animation style would carry forward into countless Hanna-Barbera follow-ups across the next half century.
For its era, the show represents Hanna-Barbera at its most successful in the late 1960s. The series became one of the studio's longest-running properties, generating direct sequels, spin-offs, and reboots that have continued without serious interruption since the original broadcast.
