Scooby's All Star Laff-A-Lympics 3-Disc Box Set DVD
Scooby's All Star Laff-A-Lympics is the great Hanna-Barbera roll call of the late 1970s, an absurd Olympic competition between three teams stocked with the studio's full character roster. The Yogi Yahooeys gather the gentle-comedy crowd. The Scooby Doobies handle the action heroes. The Really Rottens bring together every villain on the lot. The series aired on ABC starting in 1977, sending these teams to two real-world locations every week to compete in events that almost never resembled actual sports. It is a cartoon that takes its silliness seriously enough to commit to it for two full seasons.
What makes the show distinct is its sheer scale. No other children's program of its era pulled together so many recognizable characters under a single premise. Mel Blanc and Joe Besser anchor the voice booth alongside the rest of the studio's bench, and the cast credits read like a who's who of mid-century animation. The international setting of each episode lets the writers cycle through every tone of comedy the studio knew how to produce, and the team-based format creates running rivalries that carry across both seasons.
For Hanna-Barbera, the show works as a celebration of two decades of in-house creations. The team-based format introduces kids to characters they might otherwise have missed entirely, and the curated roster gave a generation of viewers their cleanest tour through the studio's catalog. By the late 1970s, the studio was at the height of its reach, and Laff-A-Lympics captured the full range of what its creative pipeline could deliver.
The team chemistry is what carries each episode. "The Swiss Alps And Japan" launches the series with the rivalries that drive everything that follows. "Egypt And Sherwood Forest" leans into the show's casual relationship with geography. "Hawaii And Norway" plays the slapstick. "South America And Transylvania" goes monster-movie. The closer "Siam And The Moon" sends the teams to the lunar surface. All 24 episodes across 3 DVDs collect both seasons, every team, every event, every Hanna-Barbera character call-back, in one box.
