The original Yu-Gi-Oh! anime, often called "Season Zero" by fans, follows Yugi Mutou, a shy high school student who solves the mysterious Millennium Puzzle. Upon doing so, he becomes the host of a darker, more confident spirit—Yami Yugi—who emerges when Yugi or his friends are threatened. Unlike later adaptations focused on the Duel Monsters card game, this version covers a wider variety of "shadow games" involving psychological stakes, life-or-death puzzles, and moral comeuppance. The show explores friendship, justice, and identity, with Yugi and his friends facing dangerous opponents—from devilish gamers to psychic manipulators—as they uncover the puzzle’s secrets. The tone is darker and more psychological than later iterations of the franchise, making it a cult favorite among longtime fans.
